Functions of packaging
- Packaging must protect and preserve the commodity right from the
time it is packed to the point of consumption.
- Packaging should be such that it is suitable for the chosen
selling and distribution system.

- It should be consumer friendly such that it is easy to open,
store and dispose.
- Most important of all is that packaging of any product should
help in selling the product. The shape of the package should be
advantageous to dispensation and reclosure and to its disposal and
reuse
Packing materials
- Paper and paper based products : They are in the form of cartons,
boxes, bags wrappers, etc. The advantages of paper are its low cost,
relative weightlessness, easy disposal, easy availability in various
types etc. The main demerits are it is of low tear and wet-strength.
However they are durable if they are properly treated or coated.
- Plastics : Flexible plastic packaging films are used to make
bags, wrappers, pouches while a wide variety of rigid plastics can
be used as thermoformed, like cartons, bottles etc. These are of two
types of plastics for packaging-high polymers which includes
polypropylene, polystyrene, polyester etc. and low polymers which
includes cellophane (coated with polyethylene).
- Aluminum foil : A very popular packaging material. It has good
barrier properties, is greaseproof, shrink-proof, tasteless,
odorless, hygienic etc.
- Timber : This is used in the form of box, tub or barrel. It has
an attractive appearance and necessary mechanical strength. The
packaging can be treated with casein-formalin, or spread with
paraffin-wax or plastics, so that it becomes more water resistant.
- Glass : It is found in the form of bottles, jars, jugs etc. It is
transparent or opaque. It has the merits of strength, rigidity. It
acts as an excellent gas and water vapor barrier.
- Tinplate : This is a thin sheet of mild steel coated on both
sides with a layer of pure tin. It has good strength, excellent
barrier properties. It is used in the form of cans.
- Laminates : Some typical laminates for packaging are paper
polythene, cellophane-polythene, and polyester-polythene.
Laminations are made for various reasons such as follows
- To strengthen the film material.
- To improve barrier properties.
- To improve grease-resistance.
- To provide a heat-seal surface etc.
