Embossed
hologram is a white-light transmission hologram applied to a reflecting
relief surface so that it diffracts light. First, a transmission
stereogram is printed on a light-sensitive medium that is engraved to
form a microscopic relief pattern that matches the interference pattern
of the holographic image. The relief pattern is then coated with a thin
film of nickel or silver and used as a mold. The mold is used to
hot-stamp the relief pattern into highly reflective film.
The embossed holograms offer the benefit of multiple colors, yet lack
the full three dimensional parallax that can be obtained in film,
photopolymer or glass plate holograms. Most embossed hologram film is
created as a "rainbow", so that each holographic element in an
image will shift through the entire visible spectrum as the image is
moved.
New techniques are now allowing us to produce 3-Dimensional structures
and images, as these structures are not dependent on light diffraction,
they are viewable and remain the same under all lighting conditions.
