Butyl
tapes are available as a solid butyl rubber pressure sensitive tape
supplied in roll form in a variety of widths and thickness. Tapes are
also available with highly compressible PVC foam core encapsulated with
high tack butyl adhesive and with butyl rubber adhesive on an aluminum
foil backing.
Features
- Offer conformability to irregular surfaces
- Offer instant water tight bonds for optimum sealing
- Secure protection when used as a sealant against moisture and
dust in appliance
- Help prevent and reduce costly water damage
- Fairly cheap
Applications
Butyl tapes are used for sealing roof-mounted air conditioners, vents,
antennas, awnings and window trim. They are useful in sealing storage
bins to interior refrigerators and plumbing to exterior seams, for
bonding various substrates such as painted metals, aluminum, wood,
glass, steel and many plastics and composite materials. Also used for
sealing auxiliary spotlights, running and directional lights and for
construction of vehicle body and cab including panels, body seams,
underbody, roofing, truck beds, trim, wheel wells and exterior
electrical harnessing.
Disadvantage
Butyl tapes are not an adhesive and should never be used to install a
windshield or any glass that is not mechanically fastened to the
vehicle. Butyl is used with foam for various applications. Butyl alone
when used for sealing mechanism, when flattened will bounce back into
shape forming a leak proof seal every time. Foam core provides a unique
compression recovery capability to the butyl tape. Butyl tapes dont
work well under cold weather conditions.
